American International College | Colaccino center for Health Sciences

The study of Health Science involves a deep understanding of a body’s potential, strength, and movement. The architecture of AIC’s new Health Science building represents these elemental concepts by showcasing the parade of its occupant’s body movement throughout the buildings circulation.

The existing building structure was in good condition. The project team felt it was necessary to remove the majority of the existing conditions, with exception of the structural shell, to accommodate the proposed program and aesthetic. This also helped to simplify the renovation and allows the existing building to blend in with new design.

Final Renderings

The existing building facade, primarily brick, was repaired and received cladding around the existing windows to match the detailing of the new building. Inside, large openings were made within the façade of the existing building so that the spaces could be easily intertwined, connected by a grand, interior, court.

The Design Team was challenged to create a visual impact on State Street while maintaining a tight budget. This was achieved by eliminating interior corridors and focusing the majority of the building circulation to an atrium.

We also were able to create a visual impact by focusing the major design elements toward the front of the building. The design of the back of the building, facing a small parking lot, was limited to simple and inexpensive materials.

The College's main library underwent an interior renovation of the first and second floor mezzanine. The remodel consisted of new finishes, furniture, privacy walls, millwork, and in some areas, new ceiling and light fixtures.

Two existing restrooms were also updated with new finishes and partitions. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work consisted of the replacement of light fixtures, new sinks for cafe, and new ventilation and cooling for privacy wall areas and computer labs.

The team worked with students and staff to create a collaborative, colorful, and engaging environment. The flag room incorporates different cultures featuring bold colors and collaboration areas.

American International College | Dining Commons

Springfield, MA

This 34,000 sf renovation and expansion covers two floors and includes a full service student dining facility. An existing entrance to the dining hall was converted into an area for additional seating, and a new atrium entrance was built for easier access to all the building’s amenities.

The atrium addition offers necessary updates including handicap elevators, new bathrooms and storage lockers, and provides a main focal entrance to the building. It also improves visibility of the entrance to the lower level student bar and lounge, known as “The Stinger” that was previously concealed in the old entrance.
